Dyslexia: Dyslexia is a catchall term that really means a specific problem in reading. The most common cause of difficulty for children learning to read is a weakness in the ability to process the phonological features of language. This means, the ability to identify, think about and manipulate the sounds in words.

Youngsters who are identified as having a problem learning to read usually lack the ability to translate between printed word and verbal language, and generally have difficulty sounding out words.

Some significant observable indicators of children at risk for reading problems include:

1.
Inability to perform rhyming tasks
2.
Difficulty sounding out words
3.
Inability to match sounds in words
4.
Difficulty segmenting units of speech/sentences into words, words
into syllables and syllables into phonemes.
5.
Difficulty following directions
6.
History of ear infections
